Christmas Spending
Enjoy the season without the January stress
Christmas is a special time of year, but presents, food, nights out and travel can quickly add up. A little planning now can help you enjoy Christmas without starting the New Year worrying about money. |
Set a Realistic Christmas Budget
Before you start shopping, decide how much you can actually afford to spend. Think about all your Christmas costs, not just presents:
- Gifts for family and friends
- Christmas food and treats
- Travel and fuel
- Decorations
- Christmas parties and nights out
- Postage and delivery costs
- Children’s Christmas activities
Remember: Christmas is one day. Do not put yourself under financial pressure for months afterwards trying to pay for it.
Make a List and Stick to It
Write down everyone you plan to buy for and set a spending limit for each person. Shopping with a list can help you avoid impulse purchases and make it easier to compare prices. Before buying online, take a few minutes to check other Irish retailers. Small savings across several gifts can make a big difference.
Talk to Family
Christmas does not have to mean buying expensive presents for everyone. Consider:
- Setting a family spending limit
- Doing a Secret Santa
- Buying only for children
- Giving homemade or personalised gifts
- Spending time together instead of exchanging expensive presents
Do not feel under pressure to spend more than you can afford just because you have done so in previous years.
Be Careful When Using Credit
Credit can make Christmas spending feel easier, but borrowed money still has to be repaid. Before borrowing, ask yourself:
Can I comfortably afford the repayments alongside my normal bills and expenses? |
Avoid borrowing more than you need, and always understand the total cost of the credit before committing.
Start Saving for Next Christmas
One of the best ways to reduce Christmas money worries is to start saving early. Instead of trying to find hundreds of euro in November or December, put aside a manageable amount regularly throughout the year.
Regular saving | After 12 months |
€10 per week | €520 |
€20 per week | €1,040 |
€25 per week | €1,300 |
€50 per month | €600 |
€100 per month | €1,200 |
Make Regular Saving a Habit
At ANSAC Credit Union, we encourage members to build the habit of regular saving. Consider setting aside an amount each payday or arranging a regular transfer into your savings. Treating savings like any other regular expense can make it easier to stay consistent.
You do not have to save a huge amount. Start with an amount you can comfortably afford and build from there.
Join the ANSAC Christmas Savings Club
